Joani Schatzman Oral History
Joani discusses growing up in Chicago and going to college in Boston and coming out while living in Boston. She shares how she got to Charlottesville and opened Charlottesville’s first gay bar, Muldowney’s Pub. After selling Muldowney’s, she worked as a carpenter and eventually owned her own contracting business. She discusses being a miss in a male-dominated field, building her village on her block in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville. She talks about the current state of the queer community in Charlottesville and race relations in the queer community. Finally, she discusses old gay people.
