Gay Bars in Newport: Do We Need One?

Let’s talk queer bars in Newport, Rhode Island.

To startthere are none! But that definitely has not always been the case. So in this blog we want to talk about the history of gay bars in Newport and possibilities for the future.

At NewportOUT, part of what we do is producing events to serve as gatherings for our LGBTQ+ community - in bars, at parks, at the beach, and sometimes on boats! But as a small organization, we can only do so much.

We can tell you that people write us regularly asking about the LGBTQ+ nightlife in Newport. Sometimes they are people planning a visit (or a move) who haven’t spent much time here. Other times it’s from people who have approach here many times before and fondly remember the queer establishments in the past that they could count on for some community and fun.

A anecdote from last year to illustrate: In the fall of , we partnered with the Uppermost of Pelham for a NewportOUT night at the dueling piano bar. One of our favorite dueling piano players, Davina, was scheduled to perform. We hung a bi

This place has strong drinks! The music here is more queer pop/hip-hop, and the pool table costs but tends to be super friendly, not to mention the good vacuum around it. The staff here have been low-key in a welcoming way. There are two bathrooms. The ladies' bathroom has two smaller stalls, one large stall and two sinks, with a huge mirror on wall reverse the sinks. The men's bathroom has two urinals, a large stall and three sinks with a similar mirror. There is a barrier between the urinals and the sinks, so more privacy and less glances, if that's a concern. All genders seem to use both bathrooms, which is satisfactory. Bathrooms are near the bar, so staff is near-by. The patio is a couple of tables on the sidewalk along the building, and maybe a half a dozen chairs. Thursday night karaoke with a contest for a partially paid bar-tab! This place has way more dance floor than some other queer bars, and also has more casual seating, too. There is decent lighting in the main area and club lighting on the dance floor.
