As part of LGBTQ+ History Month we've looked support at some of the Welsh capital's iconic bars and the new wave of inclusive queer nights which now make up the scene in the city

When Damian Kerlin moved to Cardiff from Derry, Northern Ireland, at the young age of 19, he said the Welsh gay nightlife scene was an utter sensory overload. Some people laugh at Damian when he describes his awe at Cardiff's bright lights, but it was a huge sea change in his life

"Northern Ireland is much slower than the rest of the UK in terms of LGBTQ+ equality. We had one gay block which was very much on the fringes of the town. To reach from that and be able to go to bars like Pulse, Eagle, WOW Bar, the Golden Cross - you even had Club X at the time which I adored. Every bar catered to a different audience whether that was tune, style and older or younger clientele", he said.

From August , Bristol came alive as the UK and Ireland’s LGBTQ+ choirs gathered for the much-anticipated Hand in Hand festival. Originally set for , the event was postponed due to Covid, but it was well worth the wait! Held every two years, Hand in Hand carefully avoids clashing with its European counterpart, Various Voices, so that choirs can enjoy both.

After stops in London, Brighton, Manchester, and Cardiff, this year it was Bristol's turn to host—and it didn’t disappoint!

Bristol Takes Center Stage

This year’s festival, badged as a weekend of music, community, and celebration, went above and beyond. Glorious weather, an amazing venue at the newly refurbished Bristol Beacon, and, of course, the fantastic choirs made it truly spectacular. With multiple stages throughout the venue, the festival had a genuine buzz. The sun shining over Bristol’s stunning backdrop made the whole exposure even more magical.
