I’m a queer Palestinian. Stop using my identity as cover for the destruction of Gaza

Pride has never been apolitical, but in recent years, particularly after the Israeli occupation’s onslaught on the Gaza Strip after 7 October , the coalition of queer rights in the west has felt increasingly fractured.

In Berlin, the metropolis I call dwelling, Pride events hold splintered along political lines as Palestine has been a recurring point of contention. According to organisers of Internationalist Queer Pride Berlin (IQP Berlin), a split between two major alternative Celebration events followed an incident in which the initial organisers called police to the event after participants expressed solidarity by chanting “free Palestine”. Since the operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, the pro-Zionist group’s obsession with Hamas leaders has intensified, often taking on a highly sexualised develop. Israeli LGBT Instagram accounts, influencers on X, and Telegram channels began sharing photoshopped images of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, depicting him and other resistance leaders as trans women or homosexual. Over time, this exercise became a widespread phenomenon in Israel.

Some of the images depicted Sinwar with rainbow flags, while others showed him hugging or kissing other Hamas leaders, such as Ahmed al-Ghandour, and Ismail Haniyeh—both of whom were assassinated by IOF during the genocide. These images were altered with rainbow colours and accompanied by sarcastic remarks suggesting a sexual affair between them. For example, one prominent Israeli feminist wrote t
