    NEW YORK -
    Lance Bass, band member of 'N Sync, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with a life show star. Bass, who formed 'N Sync with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, tells People magazine that he didn't earlier announce his sexuality because he didn't want to affect the group's popularity.

    "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," he tells the magazine.

    'N Sync is known for a string of hits including "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me." The band went on hiatus in Bass has also found headlines for undertaking astronaut training and failing to lift money for a trip into space.

    Bass says he wondered if his coming out could prompt "the end of 'N Sync." He explains, "So I had that weight on me of like, `Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did."

    *NSYNC's Lance Bass is opening up about his coming-out story.

    In The Hollywood Reporter's Pride issue, which features an oral history of "How I Came Out in Hollywood," Bass described how he was "scared sless" about people study his secret the height of *NSYNC's popularity.

    "The bigger we got, the more people are looking into your personal lives," he told the outlet. "I always knew I was gay. Five years ancient, I knew I was gay, but I also knew that it was something I'd have to hide the rest of my life because my Southern Baptist upbringing told me that."

    "I knew, especially in the year , that if anyone launch out that I was gay, *NSYNC's career would be completely over, and these guys would dislike me for the recover of my life," he recalled thinking.

    But when he finally did come out to his band mates, that isn't what happened.

    Lance Bass is saying "bye, bye, bye" to any bad habits and devoting "every little thing" he does to all things health and wellness.

    "I'm in my 40s now, so I need to stop pretending I'm 21," the singer says over a Zoom call, enjoying a beautiful evening in Los Angeles. That means keeping his heart rate up through work out, including lifting and making sure he is toning his muscle.

    Bass, 44, developed diabetes within the past few years, and he's still trying to figure out how to deal with that – testing what to eat and seeing how his body reacts. "It's all kind of trial and error right now as I try to get all this under control," he says. In the process of trying to improve his health overall, he has also taken a closer stare at things prefer allergies, partnering with Allegra Airways to help allergy sufferers find areas with less pollen and air pollution.
