“I include the label of bad feminist because I am human. I am messy. I’m not trying to be an example. I am not trying to be perfect. I am not trying to say I have all the answers. I am not trying to say I’m right. I am just trying—trying to help what I have faith in, trying to do some nice in this nature, trying to construct some noise with my writing while also being myself.”

As I’m reading a publication, I make notes and mark quotes that I find interesting or might want to review at a later time. In my first post, Awful Feminist by Roxane Homosexual, I wrote about my general impression of the book and how it impacted my view of feminism. Gay introduces the loneliness, community, and belonging motif to ground readers in her humanity and to begin building on the theme of The Fullness and Complexity of Humanity. By introducing herself in this way, she presents herself as relatable while also implying that all of her analyses and discussions are rooted in the sense that (marginalized) people may have of merely wanting their humanity to be recognized.
“What I remind myself, regularly, is this: the acknowledgment of my privilege is not a denial of the ways I have been and am marginalized, the ways I have suffered.”
